CIB CEO Hisham Ezz El-Arab sparked a national debate this week, warning on Bloomberg and MBC that non-bank lending platforms risk becoming an unregulated shadow banking system. Amr Adeeb challenged him live on air. Thndr's co-founder fired back, clarifying the platform is a licensed investment intermediary — not a lender. But the debate conflated two fundamentally different things: borrowing money vs investing it. Putting money in a bank savings account or taking a loan is a credit relationship. Buying stocks or funds through Thndr is an ownership relationship — regulated by the FRA, not the CBE, with entirely different risk profiles, protections, and upside. The real gap isn't between banks and fintech. It's in investor education — understanding what kind of relationship you're entering with your money. That's the infrastructure Pend is building. Not legal or investment advice — verify with your provider and regulators.
